Traditional Wrestling bouts begin at Dhummu Shah Fair in Dharamshala

DHARAMSHALA, April 9 : A vibrant blend of enthusiasm and tradition marked the second day of the historic Dhummu Shah Fair on Thursday, as the traditional wrestling competition (dangal) was formally inaugurated.

Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratna inaugurated the event after performing rituals at the Bharari Mata Temple. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted that wrestling is emerging as a professional sport in India, earning the country recognition at the international level.

Encouraging youth to take up sports, Ratna said that games not only keep the body fit but also instill discipline and self-confidence. He emphasized that fairs are an integral part of the country’s rich cultural

heritage and serve as platforms for social interaction and community bonding.

“In a time when lifestyles are rapidly changing, such cultural events play a crucial role in strengthening social unity,” he added.

The SP also urged young people to stay away from drugs, stressing their vital role in nation-building. He noted that the government is taking effective steps to curb drug abuse.

Earlier, Fair Officer and SDM Mohit Ratna welcomed the chief guest and shared detailed information about the event, stating that active participation of local residents is being ensured to preserve and enhance the fair’s cultural significance.
