YAMUNANAGAR, Apr 9L: Eleven persons, including seven children, suffered burn injuries after a gas cylinder leak triggered an explosion and a blaze at a residential quarter for migrant labourers here on Thursday, police said.
According to officials, most victims sustained 50-60 per cent burns with the young children crying and writhing in pain.
Jagadhari Station House Officer Tarsem Kumar told PTI that a family residing near a factory in Salempur Bangar area was preparing food over firewood during the morning hours when the incident took place.
There was a leakage from an LPG cylinder kept nearby, which burst into flames upon coming in contact with the open fire, causing an explosion which severely damaged the walls of the quarter,” he said.
Among the injured were a two-month-old infant and a pregnant woman. Two 43-year-old men, and seven children between the ages of five and ten were also injured.
The injured were admitted to the civil hospital in Jagadhari, Kumar said, adding that those who suffered serious burn injuries were later referred to a hospital in Chandigarh.
Investigation is underway to ascertain how the blaze was triggered, he said.
Raj Kumar, a resident of the area, said he was returning home from duty in the morning when he heard a blast.
Residents said there are multiple quarters in the area for migrant workers who work in nearby factories. (PTI)
