JAMMU, Apr 8: The Brick Kiln Owners Association (BKOA), Jammu, has expressed grave concern over the worsening condition of the brick kiln industry in the region.
In a statement issued here, today Prabhu Dayal Gupta, senior member of the Association stated that continuous heavy rains coupled with an unprecedented rise in coal prices have pushed kiln owners into a deep financial crisis.
Highlighting the impact of adverse weather conditions, he said that prolonged rains have severely disrupted the brick manufacturing process. Large quantities of unbaked (Kachha) bricks have been damaged, resulting in heavy financial losses for kiln owners. The situation has also reduced the number of working days, further affecting production and income.
He said in addition to weather-related challenges, the steep increase in coal prices has made operations extremely difficult. Coal, being the primary fuel for brick kilns, has become significantly expensive, thereby raising the overall cost of production. Many small and medium kiln operators are finding it increasingly difficult to sustain their businesses under such pressure.
Gupta emphasized that this “double blow” of natural and economic factors is making the brick kiln industry economically unviable. He warned that if immediate steps are not taken, several brick kilns may be forced to shut down, leading to unemployment and disruption in the construction sector.
He urged the Government to take immediate measures to address the crisis, including regulation of coal prices, ensuring the supply of quality fuel, and providing financial relief to affected kiln owners. He also called for long-term support to modernize the industry and protect it from future uncertainties.
He said the Brick Kiln Owners Association, Jammu, are hopeful that the concerned authorities will take prompt action to safeguard the interests of thousands of families dependent on this sector.
