Japan uses direct contacts with Iran to ensure shipping safety: Prime Minister

TOKYO, April 6 : Japan is using direct channels of communication with Iran to ensure shipping safety in the Strait of Hormuz amid the escalating situation in the Middle East, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said.
“We have maintained close communication with Iran at various levels to date. Expressing concern about the numerous vessels remaining in the Persian Gulf, including those linked to Japan, we demand that the Iranian side take appropriate action to ensure the safety of all vessels in the Strait of Hormuz,” she said in response to questions in parliament.
She added that Japan intended to continue using direct channels of communication with Tehran.
“Using this direct channel with Iran, we will continue to seek appropriate measures to ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. It is important that the safe navigation of all vessels, including Japanese ones, is ensured in the Strait of Hormuz,” the prime minister added.
On February 28, the US and Israel began striking targets in Iran. Iran is retaliating with strikes on Israeli territory, as well as on US military facilities in the Middle East. This has effectively halted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz – a key route for oil and liquefied natural gas supplies from the Persian Gulf to global markets. As a result, fuel prices are rising in most countries.
