UDHAMPUR, Apr 3: In an inspiring example of self-reliance and innovation, a resident of Kambal Danga in Udhampur District has successfully transformed his ancestral land into a flourishing organic farm, emerging as a role model for local youth.
Having a Master’s degree in Sociology, Rampal Sharma initially faced uncertainty over unemployment. However, instead of seeking conventional job opportunities, he turned towards agriculture with a progressive mindset. With guidance from the Department of Horticulture, he ventured into high-value crop cultivation, particularly strawberries—an uncommon choice in the region at the time.
“I started strawberry cultivation five years ago on just two kanals of land. Today, I have expanded it to six kanals,” Rampal said while sharing his journey. He emphasized that adopting organic farming practices and avoiding chemical fertilizers has not only improved the quality of produce but also enhanced market demand.
Rampal’s success story is not limited to personal achievement. His farm has become a source of livelihood for his entire family and has generated employment opportunities, especially for local women who assist in farming activities. His initiative has contributed to strengthening the rural economy in the area.
Recalling the initial challenges, Rampal said that villagers were skeptical about his decision. “People didn’t even know what strawberries were and believed I was wasting my land,” he said. However, his perseverance paid off, and his success has gradually changed perceptions.
Today, inspired by his achievements, farmers in his panchayat have collectively brought around 25 kanals of land under strawberry cultivation, marking a significant shift towards diversified and high-value agriculture in the region.
Rampal also highlighted the support extended by the Horticulture Department, particularly the provision of a 50 percent subsidy on machinery, which has made modern farming techniques more accessible and affordable for growers.
His journey underscores the growing potential of organic and high-value farming in Jammu & Kashmir and reflects how innovation, institutional support, and determination can transform rural livelihoods.
