Srinagar, Mar 30: Government Medical College Anantnag today received a high-end 1.5 Tesla MRI machine, with installation work already underway, officials said.
The advanced diagnostic equipment has reached the college premises and will now undergo installation, officials said, adding that the facility is expected to become operational soon and will significantly enhance diagnostic capabilities at the hospital.
Once commissioned, the MRI facility will provide advanced imaging services locally and improve patient care. Currently, patients from South Kashmir often travel to other districts or depend on private diagnostic centres for MRI scans, according to officials.
The development has been attributed to sustained efforts of Principal and Dean Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, under whose leadership the project was actively pursued.
A GMC spokesperson said the process also involved coordinated efforts from Medical Superintendent Dr. Arshad Hassan Siddiqui, Head of Radiology Dr. Mir Saiqa Shafi, Senior Consultant Radiologist Dr. Owvass Hameed Dar, Chief Accounts Officer Mohammad Ayub Lone, Deputy Director Planning Khursheed Ahmad Peer, and other staff members.
Dr. Mir Saiqa Shafi said coordination and administrative support were key to achieving the milestone.
Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb congratulated the people of South Kashmir on the addition of the facility and reiterated the institution’s commitment to strengthening healthcare and academic services.
She also acknowledged the support of the district administration and the J&K Government in upgrading infrastructure at the college.
Officials added that the MRI unit is likely to reduce patient burden, cut travel costs, and enable timely diagnosis once it becomes fully operational.
