Firing on Dr Farooq: court extends accused’s police remand till Mar 23

JAMMU, Mar 16: A court here has extended till March 23 the police remand of the accused, who allegedly tried to assassinate former Chief Minister and NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah, while the latter was coming out of a marriage hall at Greater Kailash locality on March 11.

The accused, Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi area of Jammu, was earlier in the day produced before the court by a 7-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police probing the case.
He is being investigated in connection with FIR No. 29/2026 registered at Police Station Gangyal under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.
The prosecution sought further custody of the accused, stating that sustained interrogation was required to ascertain the motive behind the alleged firing and to probe all circumstances related to the case.
After hearing the arguments, the court allowed the extension of police custody till March 23.
Earlier, on March 12, the court had sent the accused to five-day police remand after investigators said custodial interrogation was necessary to verify the motive behind the attack and to examine whether he had links with any organisation or individual.
The court had also directed the police to conduct his medical examination every 24 hours.
The alleged firing incident had raised security concerns due to the high-profile nature of the target, and the investigation is currently being monitored by the SIT.
