Speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting of the party’s senior leadership to review organisational functioning and discuss the prevailing situation, Mufti said Iran has stood with India during difficult times and that the long-standing relationship should be taken into consideration.
Mufti said the party passed a resolution expressing strong solidarity with the people of Iran amid the ongoing crisis. She also hailed the people of Kashmir for holding peaceful protests in support of Iran.
“We salute the people of Iran who are fighting powerful forces. They must be applauded for their courage,” she said.
Highlighting historical links, Mufti said Islam reached Kashmir through Iran, reflecting the deep cultural and spiritual ties between the two regions.
She appealed to people in J&K to offer special prayers for the people of Iran, particularly during the last days of the holy month of Ramzan.
She also urged Muslim countries, especially the Gulf countries, to come forward and extend support to Iran during the current crisis.
Mufti further appealed to the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the police authorities to release those arrested in Kashmir for staging protests in support of Iran.
“They protested because they were in pain and the protests were peaceful. Iran holds a special place in the hearts of Kashmiris,” she said.
Referring to the bail granted to separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah by the Supreme Court, Mufti said it came after a long legal struggle by his family.
“His daughter struggled to get her father released and he has finally received what was his right after several years,” she added.
“There are many others in prison who do not have the means to pursue legal battles or approach the Supreme Court,” she said, adding that those who have not yet faced trial should be released.
Mufti also welcomed the revocation of the National Security Act against Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk, saying the law should not have been invoked against him in the first place.
“He is a great nationalist who has worked for the betterment of the country. Arresting him was wrong, but it has now been corrected after the NSA was revoked,” she said.
