Overnight rains lashed Srinagar and several other parts of Kashmir today, bringing a noticeable drop in day temperatures across the Valley.
Director of the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, told Excelsior that several weak Western Disturbances are approaching the region which will keep weather conditions mostly cloudy and lead to intermittent precipitation.
“Several weak Western Disturbances are approaching J&K which will lead to intermittent light rainfall and moderate snowfall in higher altitudes and will lead to a dip in temperature,” Ahmad said.
He said the weather has already begun to change from March 10 as expected. On Tuesday, light rainfall was recorded in the plains while upper reaches witnessed light snowfall, with cloudy conditions prevailing across J&K.
According to the MeT Department, another spell of precipitation is expected from Tuesday night till Wednesday morning, which may bring moderate rainfall in the plains and moderate snowfall in the hilly areas of north and central Kashmir.
“A light spell of rain and snowfall is also likely between the morning of March 11 and March 12,” Ahmad said.
The department has further forecast another Western Disturbance around March 15-16, which may bring light rainfall and snowfall, followed by another system on March 17-18 that could trigger similar weather activity.
Ahmad said J&K will witness mostly cloudy conditions till around March 20, with intermittent light precipitation and moderate snowfall in higher reaches, though no major weather system is currently expected.
He also said temperatures are likely to dip on March 10 and 11 and remain 4-6 degrees below normal during this period.
“After March 12, temperatures will rise again. However, even if temperatures drop slightly now, it will not have much impact as they are already running above normal,” he said.
The change in weather comes after an unusually dry spell earlier this year.
