Bid to smuggle phones in Bhaderwah jail foiled

JAMMU, Mar 7: Prisoners, mainly Kashmiris and locals, clashed inside the District Jail at Dhangri in Rajouri prompting authorities to intervene while police foiled an attempt to smuggle mobile phone in Doda’s district jail at Bhaderwah. Cops conducted searches in Kathua district jail as a precautionary measure.

A clash broke out among inmates inside the district jail Dhangri in Rajouri following a heated argument between two prisoners.
The altercation between the two inmates – one from Kashmir and the other from Rajouri – soon escalated, triggering a scuffle among other prisoners, the reports said.
During the clash, some inmates allegedly pelted stones at prison guards, prompting authorities to intervene and bring the situation under control.
Some Kashmiri prisoners set blankets on fire and then pelted stones on jail and police personnel, who reached the prison to control the situation.
Unofficial reports said some cops and prisoners were injured in the clash but there was no official confirmation.
They said additional personnel were deployed and security was tightened inside and around the prison premises as a precautionary measure.
Situation was brought under control late this evening.
Meanwhile, authorities at District Jail Bhaderwah intercepted a domestic parcel containing two keypad mobile phones intended for an inmate.
The recovery was made during a routine security check of a parcel addressed to Irshad Ahmed Wani, son of Habibullah Wani, a resident of Ghat Mohalla Hajin, Bandipora.
Wani has been lodged in the jail since February 6, 2026, under Public Safety Act following orders from the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir.
According to Police, the parcel was sent via Post Office by one Mohd Younis Wani, son of Ghulam Mohd Wani, a resident of Gudoora, Pulwama.
The sender’s Aadhaar details and mobile number were used to track the origin of the package.
Police Station Bhaderwah has registered an FIR with No. 25/2026 in this regard under Sections 223 and 49 of BNS along with Section 42 of the Prisons Act and started investigation.
Meanwhile, police carried out searches in District Jail Kathua as a precautionary measure.
However, there were no reports of any significant recoveries.
All barracks were searched in the presence of senior police officers.
