JAMMU, Feb 24: Around 100 students drawn from various colleges across Jammu today staged a protest in front of the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh near Dogra Chowk, demanding capital punishment for the accused involved in the rape of a three-year-old girl in the Bishnah area.
Raising slogans against the heinous crime, the students expressed deep anger and anguish and called for exemplary punishment to ensure justice for the victim. The protesters assembled at the busy junction in the heart of the winter capital and held placards demanding that such offenders should be given the harshest possible punishment. They asserted that those who commit crimes against minor children do not deserve any leniency and must be awarded nothing less than the death sentence.
The agitating students said the incident has shaken the conscience of society and created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. “The culprit should be hanged so that it serves as a strong deterrent and no one dares to commit such barbaric acts in future,” they said. They also urged the administration and judiciary to fast-track the investigation and trial to ensure that justice is delivered at the earliest.
The protesters further appealed to the Government to take effective steps for strengthening the safety and security of women and children and to implement strict measures to curb such crimes. They stressed the need for greater awareness, stricter law enforcement and collective societal responsibility to prevent such incidents.
Pertinently, a three-year-old girl was raped by a man a few days ago in the Bishnah area, triggering widespread outrage across Jammu. The students warned that they would intensify the agitation if any leniency is shown against the accused.
