Australia’s Andrew Charlton to attend AI Impact Summit in India, Promote national AI plan

CANBERRA, Feb 17: Australia’s Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, Dr Andrew Charlton, will attend the AI Impact Summit, where he will showcase Australia’s leadership in safe, inclusive, and sustainable AI while advancing investment, international collaboration, and the vital role of workers in an AI-driven world.

The Assistant Minister will use the summit to highlight Australia’s commitment to deploying AI in the national interest and for the benefit of Australians.

He will be speaking on the importance of elevating the voice of workers as AI adoption accelerates and will promote Australia as a preferred partner for investment in sustainable AI infrastructure and safe, inclusive innovation.

“The Summit will be an important opportunity to reinforce Australia’s reputation as a regional leader for sustainable AI infrastructure, as well as safe and inclusive AI innovation,” Charlton said. “I look forward to promoting Australia’s values about inclusive AI deployment, ensuring the benefits are shared by all and underpinned by a social license. Australia and India have long shared a commitment to collaboration in business and science, and I look forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of our landmark Australia-India Strategic Research Fund together.”

The AI Impact Summit brings together national leaders, technology CEOs, academic experts, and civil society representatives to shape the future of AI policy and governance. Charlton will meet with counterparts from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and India to advance partnerships aligned with Australia’s strategic and economic interests.

He will also hold discussions with major technology companies to encourage investment in Australia’s AI ecosystem in line with the National AI Plan, which is supported by the Albanese Labor Government’s AI Safety Institute (AISI), aimed at fostering international collaboration on AI safety.

Charlton’s visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF), which has supported joint cutting-edge research between the two countries since 2006.
