BHUBANESHWAR, Feb 16: Sambalpur is set for a major infrastructural and economic boost, with the union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announcing a Rs 3,540 crore development plan.
The initiative, to be implemented over the next two years with active involvement from the PWD and R&D departments, aims to strengthen the district’s transportation network while simultaneously enhancing agricultural and allied sectors.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Subhadra Shakti, Fisheries & Animal Resources, and Agricultural Equipment Fair 2026 in Ainthapali, Sambalpur, Pradhan detailed the comprehensive development agenda.
Key projects include the construction of a Ring Road, road improvements across multiple locations, overbridges, and other ancillary works, all being executed at a rapid pace.
Highlighting the human impact, Pradhan noted that the plan will benefit around 1.5 million residents, with special focus on education, healthcare, employment, and livelihoods.
The union Minister emphasized the central government’s “double engine” strategy to boost the economic well-being of farmers through agriculture and allied activities, under the vision: “Prosperous farmers, prosperous Sambalpur.”
As an agriculture-driven district, Sambalpur will receive targeted support for farmers, fisheries, and dairy sectors. New warehouses are being constructed with assistance from MSCL, while the OMFED plant plans to produce milk powder, yogurt, and other dairy products to benefit local farmers.
On paddy procurement, over 3.1 million quintals have already been purchased, with tokens distributed to farmers to facilitate the procurement of an additional 100,000 quintals. The “Krishi Udyami” scheme is also providing substantial financial aid to empower youth in agriculture.
Beyond local development, the government is working to showcase Sambalpur’s skilled workforce internationally.
In the hospitality sector, youths have been selected with support from CII for training opportunities in countries such as Japan and Denmark.
By integrating agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, and animal husbandry initiatives, the government aims to enhance living standards and transform Sambalpur into a modern, prosperous district, Pradhan stated.
