JAMMU, Feb 13: All Jammu & Kashmir Megh Sabha today appealed to the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court to expedite the process of elevating Scheduled Caste (SC) judges to the common High Court of J&K and Ladakh.
Addressing a meeting, Narinder Datt, state president of the All Jammu & Kashmir Megh Sabha stated that for the first time in 2024, the Union Minister for Law & Justice issued directions emphasizing due preference to candidates from the Scheduled Caste community while making judicial recommendations.
However, it is a matter of concern that no concrete steps have been taken in the past two years to implement this directive.
Datt expressed anguish over the continued absence of SC representation in the higher judiciary, noting that since the establishment of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court in 1928, no Scheduled Caste judge has been elevated or adjusted to the High Court.
He termed this as a serious neglect of the community, especially when the Indian Constitution guarantees equality and fair representation to all sections of society.
The Megh community has once again urged the higher authorities to sympathetically consider their genuine demand.
Datt also appreciated MP Ghulam Ali Khatana for raising the issue in Rajya Sabha which is the first ever a bold step by any public figure.
Among others who were presentincluded Krishan Lal, Ram Lal Bhagat, Seva Ram, Doulat Ram, Ramesh Babu, Lalita Bhagat, Rajinder Bhagat, Ranjeet Bhagat and other members of the community.
