JAMMU, Feb 10: Senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh Taranjit Singh Tony on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Transport Minister over allegations of misbehaviour with members of the transport fraternity, terming the incident as a reflection of “arrogance at its peak” and an embarrassment for the Omar Abdullah-led government.
Reacting to the allegations levelled by the All Jammu and Kashmir Transport Welfare Association, Tony said the reported conduct of the minister was highly condemnable and unbecoming of a public representative. He said that ministers are expected to remain accessible and respectful towards people, particularly those representing working communities and stakeholders.
Tony alleged that such behaviour was tarnishing the image of the present government and raising serious concerns about its commitment towards public welfare and democratic engagement. “When a Cabinet Minister behaves in such an arrogant and insensitive manner, it sends a wrong message to the people and reflects poorly on the functioning of the government,” he said.
The Congress leader further said that public representatives hold constitutional positions to serve people and must remain accountable to their grievances. He asserted that ignoring or humiliating delegations seeking redressal of issues was unacceptable in a democratic system.
Taking a dig, Tony said Satish Sharma should remember the legacy of his late father, former Member of Parliament Madan Lal Sharma, who, he said, was widely respected for his humility, accessibility and commitment to public service. “By allegedly showing such arrogance, he is not only disrespecting the transporters but also defaming the legacy of his father, who carried forward the tradition of listening to every section of society,” Tony asserted.
He urged the minister to immediately clarify his position and engage with the transporters to resolve their long-pending demands. Tony said that stakeholders like transporters play a crucial role in the economy and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The Congress leader also demanded that the government take serious note of the incident and ensure that such behaviour by public representatives is not repeated.
