Saudi companies to build solar power plants in Turkey for USD 2 bn

ISTANBUL, Feb 4: Turkey and Saudi Arabia have signed a renewable energy agreement under which Saudi companies will build solar power plants in Turkey for USD 2 billion, providing electricity to nearly 2 million households, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said.

The intergovernmental agreement was signed during the minister’s visit to Riyadh, where he arrived as part of a delegation accompanying the Turkish president.

“Within the scope of the agreement, we aim to build solar and wind power plants with a total capacity of 5,000 MW in T?rkiye with Saudi Arabian companies. As the first stage of this, we decided to implement SPP projects with a total capacity of 2,000 MW in our Sivas and Karaman provinces. Solar power plants, which will be established with an investment of approximately 2 billion dollars, will meet the electricity needs of 2.1 million households,” Bayraktar said on X on Tuesday.

On the same day, the presidential office said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and noted Ankara’s desire to take relations with Saudi Arabia to a new level, including in renewable energy and the defense industry.

During the meeting, bilateral relations between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, energy, the defense industry, investment, trade, and technology cooperation, as well as regional and global issues, were discussed, the office added.
