JAMMU, Jan 29: A woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband in Billawar area of Kathua district, police said today.
The body of Bittu Ram, a resident of Dhar Dugnoo village of Billawar, was found in a stream on October 9 last year. Police said the victim had multiple injuries on his face and limbs, as well as a ligature mark around the neck.
Following on the incident, a case was registered and an investigation was launched. Police conducted a scientific examination of the crime scene and seized several exhibits.
During the probe, the police gathered evidence and examined several suspects before identifying the victim’s wife, Simro Devi, as the prime suspect.
“During questioning, the accused confessed to her involvement in the crime. She disclosed that she had illicit relationships, which led to frequent quarrels and strained relations with her husband,” a police spokesman said.
The spokesperson added that the woman admitted to strangulating her husband with a rope due to these disputes. Relevant recoveries connected to the offence were made during the investigation.
Spokesman said on October 9 Police Station, Billawar received reliable information that one person namely Bittu Ram, son of Durga Dass, resident of Dhar Dugnoo, tehsil Billawar, district Kathua, was found dead in the Nallah under mysterious circumstances. Acting promptly on the information, an inquest proceeding under Section 194 BNSS was initiated vide DDR No. 19 dated 09-10-2025.
During the course of enquiry, the police team from PS Billawar visited the spot, inspected the area, and collected crucial physical and circumstantial evidence.
Scientific examination of the scene of crime was conducted with the assistance of the FSL Unit and Crime Photography Team, and several exhibits were seized as per procedure. The post-mortem examination of the deceased was also conducted.
During a sustained enquiry, the police team led by SHO PS Billawar Inspector, Zaheer Mushtaq under the close supervision of SP Ops, Upper Kathua, Aamir Iqbal and SDPO Billawar, Neeraj Padyar and under the overall supervision of SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma through investigation, human intelligence, and technical analysis, gathered vital evidence and examined several suspects. Based on the material collected during enquiry, the inquest proceedings were converted into a murder case, and FIR No. 09/2026 under Section 103 BNS was registered at Police Station Billawar.
During further investigation, one lady namely Simro Devi, was arrested for the murder. During sustained interrogation, the accused confessed her involvement in the crime.
