JAMMU, Jan 27: Senior vice president of Apni Party, Ghulam Hassan Mir has demanded holding of the pending Panchayati Raj elections in J&K to strengthen the democratic institutions at grassroot level.
“Apni Party stands for the consolidation of democratic institutions and therefore the pending Panchayat elections should be held without any further delay, as Panchayats have become non-functional in the absence of elected representatives,” Mir said while addressing party leaders here during a meeting with party leadership of Jammu region.
“Political parties like the NC and BJP contested the last Assembly elections in J&K on regional and communal lines which widened gaps and created feelings of mistrust among the people,” he claimed referring to the aggressive election campaigns by both the parties.
Meanwhile, provincial president, Jammu, Manjit Singh, also shared organisational strategies to enhance public outreach across all areas of Jammu region.
“The rural areas of Jammu are largely neglected by the government and the situation in cities and towns is also not different,” he said expressing concern over the government’s negligent attitude towards basic facilities, especially in the post-flood period, as victims still await compensation.
Party leader Abdul Majid Padder also addressed the meeting while District president Kupwara, Raja Manzoor Ahmad also attended the meeting.
