JAMMU, Jan 23: The J&K Handicapped Association has highlighted the challenges faced by the persons with disabilities.
In a handout, State president of the Association, Abdul Rashid Bhat stated that full and effective implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 is deliberately delayed in J&K.
Bhat also said that urgent and comprehensive sensitization training is essential to ensure the officials know how to appropriately interact with and address the needs of persons with disabilities in compliance with the Act.
“The Social Welfare Department must take proactive responsibility for educating and orienting other departments on the Act’s complete provisions to promote uniform adherence,” he maintained adding that the Chief Minister should take a note of pressing needs of the specially-abled community.
The Association leader further said that the advertisement for the position of Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities was published approximately three months back but no one has been appointed so far.
“This ongoing inaction not only contravenes the spirit and intent of the RPwD Act but also deprives persons with disabilities of their rightful access to equality, inclusion, accessibility and essential support,” he continued.
