Srinagar, Jan 12: In a move to strengthen emergency healthcare services, the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, today modernised its Emergency Operation Theatre (OT) by installing state-of-the-art surgical equipment.
Officials said the upgradation includes the installation of a C-Arm mobile imaging unit and a laparoscopic system, which are expected to substantially enhance the institute’s emergency surgical capabilities.
They said the installation is aimed at enabling rapid, safe and advanced emergency interventions.
Officials said the new C-Arm facility will play a crucial role in strengthening emergency services by facilitating advanced neurosurgical spine-related interventions.
“It will also improve precision in orthopaedic and plastic surgery procedures and provide real-time imaging support in coordination with a high-end ultrasound machine, leading to better surgical outcomes across multiple specialties,” they said.
The addition of laparoscopic facilities will allow minimally invasive emergency surgeries, resulting in reduced post-operative pain and complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster patient recovery.
The technology is also expected to improve outcomes in acute surgical emergencies, particularly those related to abdominal and trauma cases, thereby significantly strengthening SKIMS’ emergency response capability, officials added.
The upgraded Emergency OT facility was reviewed and formally inaugurated in the presence of Director SKIMS and EOSG, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, along with Dean, Medical Faculty, Prof. Showkat A. Gurcoo, Medical Superintendent SKIMS, Prof. Farooq A. Jan, and Head, Emergency Department, Prof. Abrar A. Wani.
Several senior faculty members and administrative heads were also present on the occasion, including HOD General Surgery, Prof. Aijaz Mallik, HOD Paediatric Surgery, Prof. Nisar A. Bhat, and Director Finance SKIMS, Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Wani, besides other senior officials.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at ensuring timely, technology-enabled emergency surgical care, particularly in high-load emergency settings catering to patients from across J&K
