SRINAGAR, Jan 11: Police today arrested six drug peddlers in separate operations across north Kashmir’s Sopore area and south Kashmir’s Kulgam district and booked a “notorious and habitual” trafficker under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
A police spokesperson said the arrests were made during checkpoints, routine patrolling, and naka checking, leading to the recovery of various contraband substances.
“In Sopore a police party from Police Station Bomai established a checkpoint on the Nathipora-Tujjer link road and intercepted a suspicious person. During checking, a charas-like substance was recovered from his possession,” the spokesperson said.
The accused was identified as Umar Mohammad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, a resident of Sheikhpora Tujjer.
In another operation, the spokesperson said a police party from Police Post Warpora intercepted two people during a naka at Poultry Crossing on Dangerpora Road. “During search, capsules of Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus were recovered from their possession,” he said.
The two accused were identified as Majid Ashraf Khan of Pethseer Sopore and Musadiq Mehraj of Muslimpeer Sopore.
Police said that during routine patrolling at Neharpora Crossing, a police party from Police Post Bus Stand Sopore intercepted another person. “A heroin-like substance and tablets of Alprazolam were recovered during search,” the spokesperson said, identifying the accused as Nasir Yousuf Shah of Neharpora.
Meanwhile, in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, police said a patrol party from Police Station Qazigund spotted a suspicious person near the railway bridge at Nassu Badragund. “He tried to flee but was apprehended tactfully. During search, about eight grams of a brown sugar-like substance were recovered,” the spokesperson said.
The accused was identified as Azad Ahmad Naikoo of Nassu Badragund. “All the accused have been arrested and shifted to their respective police stations. Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered, and further investigation is underway to trace the source and the wider network involved,” the spokesperson added.
Separately, the spokesperson said, police in south Kashmir’s Shopian district booked a “notorious and habitual drug peddler” under the PIT NDPS Act. The accused was identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Ganaie of Itoo Mohalla, Zainapora. “The detention order was issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, after a comprehensive dossier was submitted by police detailing his sustained involvement in illicit drug trafficking,” the spokesperson said, adding that the accused has been lodged in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal in Jammu.
