MOSCOW, Dec 12 : The European union has allocated 25 million euros (USD 29.3 million) to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen the resilience of communities in Afghanistan and improve food security, EU charge d’affaires in Afghanistan Veronika Boskovic-Pohar said.
“The European Union’s new contribution to WFP demonstrates our continued commitment to the Afghan people, notably women, children, and vulnerable local communities. Agriculture and food value chains must be equipped to bolster Afghans’ nutrition, health, and economic resilience. Through our integrated approach to climate resilience, we are also helping vulnerable rural communities protect their livelihoods and income against natural disasters and long-term devastating impacts of climate change,” Boskovic-Pohar was quoted as saying by the Ariana News portal on Thursday.
The funding will support WFP initiatives aimed at improving food supply chains and adapting to climate change, the report said, adding that key projects include upgrading infrastructure such as flood protection walls and irrigation systems, mitigating climate risks, and protecting productive assets essential for local economic stability.
A significant portion of the investment will be used to develop WFP’s school feeding program and train women’s associations and young entrepreneurs to supply fresh rations to schoolchildren, the report noted.
