JAMMU, Dec 11: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) J&K general secretary and former Deputy Mayor Jammu, Baldev Singh Billawaria, has stressed on ending the disparity in the appointment of employees in Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).
Billawaria while talking to a delegation of JMC Employees Union at party headquarters here, today said “Municipal employees are the backbone of the city’s cleanliness, order, and public service, and ensuring justice for them is a priority for the BJP.” Addressing the disparity in employment practices between Srinagar and Jammu Municipal Corporations, Billawaria said, “This inconsistency in rules and appointment processes within the same region is unjust. Such discrimination adversely affects employee morale and efficiency. There is an urgent need for the UT Government to implement a fair and uniform policy to ensure equal opportunities, rights, and working conditions for all municipal employees.” He further stated, “It is disheartening that despite years of dedicated service, many JMC employees and their families remain deprived of basic entitlements such as regularization and ownership rights. “The issues raised by the delegation are entirely justified, and I personally assure that these matters will be effectively taken up with the Government and relevant departments.” Billawaria said.
The delegation was led by Rinku Gill, president of the Municipal Corporation Employees’ Union. It presented a memorandum to Billawaria outlining their demands and stressed on ending of disparity in employment practices. They said, while employees in SMC are appointed on a casual basis, those in JMC are employed on a contract basis. The delegation emphasized several long-standing and legitimate demands of municipal employees, particularly those residing in Jammu’s Safai Saathi colonies.
They said despite several generations living in these colonies for decades, residents have yet to receive formal ownership rights or regularization of the Government-allotted land and houses.
Prominent BJP leaders present included vice president, Rekha Mahajan, former MLC Charanjit Singh Khalsa, and former councilor, Sheela Handoo.
