Italian Prime Minister calls on Zelenskyy to make ‘Painful Concessions’

ROME, Dec 11: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reportedly called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to make “painful concessions” to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine during their meeting in Rome, according to Corriere della Sera.

Meloni is said to have applied moral pressure on Zelenskyy regarding the US peace plan, while Zelenskyy allegedly requested Meloni’s intervention to influence US President Donald Trump to adopt a softer stance, the report added, citing sources from the Brothers of Italy party.

Commenting on the talks, La Repubblica reported that Meloni warned Zelenskyy of the European Union’s limited capacity to provide support without assistance from the United States. She urged the Ukrainian president to engage with Trump’s peace plan to secure US security guarantees.

At the same time, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the League party, called the conflict in Ukraine a lost cause and stated that European officials are not interested in achieving peace.

“This war has already cost $300 billion, and Trump has already declared that he won’t spend a single lira next year. It will cost Europe 140 billion euros, and I will not take money from the Italian healthcare system to continue a war that is already lost,” Salvini said.

According to the politician, Russian troops are advancing, while Ukraine is struggling and is forced to mobilize its citizens, who subsequently become deserters.
