BENGALURU, Dec 9: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday unveiled the world’s second-largest Khadi Tricolour on the western steps of the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi, emphasising that the saffron band of the national flag stands as a powerful symbol of sacrifice and courage.
Addressing the gathering after the unveiling, the Chief Minister said the massive Khadi flag was not just a ceremonial installation but a reminder of India’s freedom struggle and the values that shaped the nation.
“The saffron represents sacrifice and the unshakeable spirit of those who laid down their lives for the country,” he said, adding that the white symbolises peace and truth, while the green reflects prosperity and growth.
Siddaramaiah congratulated Assembly Speaker UT Khader for initiating the effort and appreciated the family of Vinod Kumar Revappa Bammansa of Kamalapur in Kalaburagi district for contributing the giant Khadi flag.
He described the gesture as an act of deep patriotism.
“This is not merely a piece of fabric; it carries the weight of our history and the pride of every Indian,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister noted that the Tricolour, introduced during the freedom movement, embodied the spirit of unity and equality.
The Ashoka Chakra at its centre, he pointed out, symbolises progress, dynamism and equal opportunity for every citizen.
Siddaramaiah said it was the responsibility of every Indian to respect the national flag and remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters who fought against oppression.
Recalling that Mahatma Gandhi had presided over a historic Congress session in Belagavi, he said the installation of Gandhi’s statue beside the Suvarna Soudha this year marked the centenary of that event.
Calling for harmony and secular values, the Chief Minister said India’s strength lies in its diversity of castes and religions.
He urged people to cultivate brotherhood, compassion and mutual respect, saying hatred weakens societies while unity builds them.
“We must introspect on how far we have progressed in upholding these human values in the 79 years since Independence,” he added.
He said such occasions should inspire students and youth to develop patriotism and constitutional values, noting that the state government has introduced the reading of the Preamble of the Constitution in schools and colleges to strengthen democratic ideals.
Expressing gratitude once again to the Bammansa family for donating the national flag, Siddaramaiah said the unveiling of the giant Tricolour in Belagavi would remain a historic moment for Karnataka.
