JAMMU, Dec 5: A five-day capacity-building training programme on “Geospatial Applications in Agriculture”, organized under the HADP Project no. 19 was concluded at SKUAST-Jammu.
The programme, aimed at enhancing the technical skills of researchers, extension personnel and postgraduate students, wrapped up with a valedictory session coinciding with the celebration of World Soil Day, adding further significance to the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Director Research, SKUAST-J, Dr S K Gupta emphasized the importance of adopting modern geospatial tools to improve precision farming, natural-resource monitoring and climate-smart agricultural planning.
He noted that the training has strengthened participants’ ability to utilize GIS and remote-sensing platforms for farm-advisory services, research projects and extension initiatives across the region.
During the valedictory function, Dean, FoA Dr Anil Kumar Sharma highlighted the importance of soils and their management for sustainable living.
He emphasized on the digital monitoring and mapping of the soils for sustenance, better management and higher productivity.
As part of the World Soil Day celebrations, Dr Vikas Sharma, Professor and Head Division of soil science and agricultural chemistry highlighted the need for sustainable soil management, improved soil health monitoring and the role of geospatial mapping in identifying soil variability, nutrient status and erosion risks.
Participants engaged in discussions on soil conservation challenges and innovative geo-enabled approaches for safeguarding soil resources.
The sessions were facilitated by expert resource persons along with invited specialists, whose contributions were acknowledged with deep appreciation.
The trainees expressed gratitude to the university administration and the expert speakers for providing practical, high-quality learning opportunities and for organizing the valedictory event in conjunction with World Soil Day, reinforcing the vital message of “healthy soils for a sustainable future.”
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof Vikas Abrol.
