SDRF trains GMC students in disaster triage

Srinagar, Dec 4: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) today introduced medical students at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar to key principles of triage, victim prioritisation, and rapid situational assessment.
These skills, officials said, are critical during disasters and mass-casualty situations.
In this regard, a team from SDRF Bhagat Barzulla conducted an extensive demonstration-cum-mock drill on disaster preparedness and emergency management for the MBBS Batch 2025.
The programme aimed to enhance students’ awareness, technical abilities, and confidence in responding to emergencies, officials said.
The mock drill featured realistic demonstrations covering emergency situations commonly encountered during disasters.
Modules on earthquake preparedness detailed immediate actions required to minimise injuries, maintain safety, and assist victims until medical teams arrive.
Officials said that the fire emergency training included demonstrations on identifying hazards, safe evacuation techniques, and systematic response strategies.
“Students were also briefed on drowning rescue procedures, including safe retrieval and essential first-aid measures to stabilise victims before advanced care is available.”
One of the key components of the activity, as per officials, was training in managing airway obstruction in both paediatric and adult patients.
SDRF experts demonstrated the Heimlich manoeuvre and explained how to recognise choking, differentiate between partial and complete obstruction, and apply age-appropriate interventions.
Students also received hands-on practice in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including chest compressions, rescue breaths, and gaining awareness about automated external defibrillators (AEDs), in line with international emergency-care guidelines.
