JAMMU, Nov 28: SAVE society organised a workshop in co-ordination with PETA India to combat cruelty to animals and for sensitization of officers on existing laws and its implementation to reduce man animal conflicts for officers of J&K Urban Local Bodies and Transport Departments.
Nearly 160 officers participated in the session, which provided them with a briefing on the applicable laws and their responsibilities in the enforcement of laws pertaining to slaughter houses, pet shops, dog breeding establishments, animal birth control centres and much more.
“Jammu authorities aim to crack down on cruelty to animals and PETA India is pleased to support them in this effort,” says Meet Ashar, PETA India’s Legal Advisor and Director of Cruelty Response.
In 2021, the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations released a report revealing that in the decade prior nearly 500,000 animals were victims of crimes.
Chairperson Save Animals Value Environment, Devinder Kaur stated that human-animals peaceful co-existence is important as both are incomplete without each other.
The workshop was part of the initiative to remove myths and focus on scientific approach to manage stray animal population. The recent order of the Supreme Court on stray cattle and effective and sustainable dog management was discussed with the officers attending the workshop.
