Russia successfully tests new PD-8 Jet engine under heavy rain

MOSCOW, Nov 26: Russia’s United Engine Corporation (UEC), part of Rostec, has successfully conducted heavy-rain testing of the PD-8 jet engine for the new SJ-100 (Superjet) passenger aircraft, the company announced Wednesday.

“The UEC of the Russian state corporation Rostec conducted water-injection engineering tests on the latest PD-8 engine for the SJ-100. The engine’s reliable performance under heavy rainfall has been confirmed,” the company said.

The testing program comprised three phases, during which the engine was operated across multiple modes-from idle to takeoff-and subjected to sharp accelerations and decelerations, UEC reported.

“Water-injection testing simulates rainfall at the engine inlet and is a crucial step in preparing the PD-8 for certification. The tests were completed successfully, and the engine performed flawlessly, confirming its declared specifications and operational reliability,” said UEC Deputy Director of Sales Fyodor Mironov.

The PD-8 engine is undergoing a series of tests to obtain type certification, which is the final step before its serial production can be launched. The PD-8 bypass turbofan engine with an 8-tonne thrust for the SJ-100 and the Be-200 amphibious aircraft was created using advanced domestic materials and cutting-edge technologies.

Multiple UEC branches cooperated to develop it, using the experience of creating the PD-14 engine for indigenous medium-haul aircraft.
