Srinagar, Nov 26: Further strengthening its reputation as J&K’s leading centre for advanced medical care, education and research, the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, has introduced a new super-specialty programme-DNB Cardiac Anesthesiology.
Officials described the development as a major academic milestone, noting that the newly launched programme, equivalent to the DM Cardiac Anesthesia, is the first of its kind in the Union Territory.
“It will bring specialised cardiothoracic training closer to aspiring clinicians in the region,” an official said.
Known for handling some of the most complex and high-risk cardiac cases in J&K, SKIMS said the addition of this course will not only boost super-specialty training but also directly enhance patient care by increasing the availability of highly trained cardiac anesthesiologists.
It is to be noted here that these specialists are critical to improving surgical outcomes in procedures such as open-heart surgeries, valve repairs, pediatric cardiac surgeries, and advanced interventional cardiology.
Officials said the programme will help reduce patient referrals outside the UT and ensure faster, safer, and more efficient perioperative management for cardiac patients.
The rigorous three-year super-specialty programme at SKIMS aims to train anesthesiologists in comprehensive, evidence-based perioperative care across cardiothoracic and vascular procedures.
According to SKIMS, the curriculum focuses on hemodynamic management, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), perioperative cardiac optimization, mechanical circulatory support and intensive postoperative care-skills central to modern cardiac anesthesia practice and vital for improving survival and recovery among critically ill cardiac patients.
Director SKIMS, Professor Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, congratulated the SKIMS University faculty for the achievement, calling it “a vital addition that will significantly strengthen subspecialty cardiac care in J&K.”
