JKAACL pays tribute to Gianeshwar Sharma on his birth anniversary

JAMMU, Nov 24: To commemorate the birth anniversary and to pay tribute to eminent Dogri poet and writer Gianeshwar Sharma, the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, in collaboration with Bharatiya Sangeet Sansthan today organized a soulful classical vocal recital programme at Writer’s Club.
Harvinder Kour, Secretary Academy, paid rich tribute to Gianeshwar Sharma and highlighted his remarkable contributions to Dogri language, literature and cultural heritage. She stated that through this programme Academy has first time introduced Raga poetry in Indian Classical vocal music. The Ragas presented by the artists on the occasion were written by Gianeshwar Sharma as a tribute to departed soul.
Gianeshwar Sharma is a prominent figure in Dogri literature, widely respected for his dedication to enriching and promoting the language of the Jammu region. A versatile writer, he has contributed significantly through poetry, lyrics, and short stories, especially for children, capturing the essence of regional life, values, and cultural traditions. His acclaimed poetry collection Baddali Kalave earned him the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award, recognising his impactful voice in contemporary Dogri poetry. He is also a recipient of the Bal Sahitya Puraskar for his remarkable contributions to children’s literature and was honoured with the J&K State Award for Literature in 2018 for his outstanding literary achievements.
The event featured an enchanting classical vocal recital by renowned and emerging artists including Vijay Kumar Sambyal ‘Rangeeley Thakur’, Dr Roshi Shaminotra, Dr Chinmei Sharma, Kusha Sharma, Dr Rakesh Kalotra, Devangi and Ridima Bajpai, who mesmerized the audience with their melodious renditions in tribute to the legendary poet.
The performers were ably accompanied by Rajveer Singh on Tabla and Krishan Kumar ‘Johny’ on Harmonium, whose rhythmic and melodic support added brilliance to the presentations.
The proceedings of the event were conducted by Rajkumar Behrupia. Dr Javaid Rahi, Chief Editor and Divisional Head Jammu of JKAACL presented vote of thanks.
