JAMMU, Nov 24: A team from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Jammu today visited District Jail Amphalla to review the living conditions of inmates and assess facilities available inside the jail.
The visit was led by RN Wattal, Chairman DLSA Jammu, accompanied by Secretary DLSA Jammu Maleeka Sharma and Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel Anil Sharma.
The team was received by Jail Superintendent Dharminder Katoch, who briefed them about the functioning of different sections.
The officials inspected the barracks, kitchen, medical unit, vocational training centres and the legal aid clinic.
They interacted with jail staff and inmates to understand issues related to health care, sanitation, daily living conditions and access to legal aid for under-trial prisoners.
During the visit, the DLSA Chairman stressed the need for speedy trials and effective delivery of legal aid to inmates who cannot afford representation.
The team also heard grievances of inmates and assured that their concerns would be taken up with the appropriate authorities.
The jail administration highlighted ongoing welfare activities, skill-development programmes, and rehabilitation measures aimed at helping inmates reintegrate into society.
The Chairman appreciated these efforts and called for continued coordination between DLSA and the prison administration to safeguard human rights and improve correctional standards.
The visit concluded with directions to take corrective measures where required and to ensure timely legal assistance and humane treatment to all prisoners as mandated by law.
