SKIMS to partner with BSNL for tele-services: Director

Srinagar, Nov 15: Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, today announced that it is in the process of formalizing a collaboration with BSNL India to jointly develop research and patient-centric digital services, including Tele-Pathology and Tele-Radiology.
Director SKIMS, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie said that modalities for the partnership are currently being worked out.
The announcement was made during an International Conference organised by SKIMS to mark World Pathology Day, highlighting advancements and emerging challenges in the field of pathology.
Commending the department for its excellent services, Prof. Ashraf stressed the need for diversification and a multidisciplinary approach, supported by cohesive collaborations to strengthen academic and clinical excellence.
He said that apart from increasing postgraduate seats, there is a need to introduce specialized fellowship programmes and strengthen molecular pathology to transform the department into a Centre of Excellence at SKIMS.
He further informed that J&K Bank will facilitate patient appointment services through Khidmat Centres across peripheral areas, thereby improving accessibility and convenience.
He expressed gratitude to J&K Bank for its cooperation and support.
Former Director SKIMS Dr. Showkat Zargar, who graced the occasion as Chief Guest, described pathology as the “Queen of Medicine” and emphasised the importance of continuous learning and skill enhancement among faculty to improve patient care and outcomes.
Guest of Honour Prof. Sumeet Gujral, a renowned pathologist, spoke about the national scenario, pointing to an acute shortage of experts in peripheral institutions.
While acknowledging the expansion of medical colleges, he noted that around 30% still lack adequate infrastructure.
He stressed the need to bridge this gap by training and retaining skilled pathologists in peripheral areas and welcomed the growing opportunities for fellowship programmes in the field.
Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS Prof. G. M. Gulzar acknowledged the immense contribution of pathologists and said precision medicine and digital pathology are reshaping modern medical practice.
Head of the Department Prof. Syed Besina, in her welcome address, outlined the key achievements and ongoing activities of the Department of Pathology.
She highlighted the scientific sessions of the conference, which featured lectures by eminent pathologists including Prof. Nandita Kakkar and other leading experts from across the country.
