603 candidates awarded Degrees, Gold Medals in JU Convocation

JAMMU, Nov 13: During the 19th Convocation of the University of Jammu, which was held here today, 603 candidates were awarded Degrees and Gold Medals.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, who is also the Chancellor of JU, graced the occasion as the chief guest and delivered the Convocation Address while Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is also the Pro-Chancellor of JU, was the guest of honour.

This was the second special convocation, during which Gold Medals were awarded to 178 candidates from 2020 to 2023, including 43 candidates’ of 2020 batch, 85 of 2021 batch, 41 of 2022 batch and 39 of 2023 batch.
Similarly, 425 Ph D Degrees from 2020 to 2024, including 71 degrees of 2020 batch, 62 of 2021 batch, 83 of 2022 batch, 105 of 2023 batch and 104 of 2024 batch were presented.
Significantly, female scholars outperformed their male counterparts by a ratio of nearly three to one in securing Ph D degrees and Gold medals in this Convocation.
In his Convocation Address, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha underscored the importance of embracing change in the higher education sector and asked the faculty members to focus on skill-first curriculum, collaboration across disciplines and keeping pace with evolving trends to meet the demands of India’s economy and the society.
He gave five fundamental guiding principles to the students for their life journey and congratulated the University for its exemplary contribution to the country’s educational landscape. He also extended his felicitations to the women students for their excellent academic performance across the subjects
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his address, congratulated the graduating students, Medal winners and Ph D. awardees, describing the convocation as a “moment of pride, celebration and reflection” for the institution and everyone associated with it. He also reminded the young graduates that while the convocation marks the culmination of years of rigorous study and personal growth, it also signals the beginning of a new journey filled with purpose, challenges, and opportunities.
Highlighting the University’s achievements, CM commended Vice Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai and his team for their relentless commitment to academic excellence, innovation and holistic student development. He expressed confidence that the University of Jammu will continue to shine as a centre of excellence, innovation, and character building, and that its students will carry forward the legacy of knowledge and service to society.
Earlier, presenting the academic report card of JU, Vice- Chancellor, Prof Umesh Rai spoke about the university’s flagship Design Your Degree (DYD) programme and innovative College on Wheels programme. He further highlighted that the University has expanded its research base through internal R&D, SEED, and transdisciplinary research grants, while securing significant extramural funding from agencies such as UGC, DST, DBT, and CSIR.
The VC also announced the launch of an Integrated UG-PG Programme from the next academic session, modeled on DYD, with skills, entrepreneurship, and innovation at its core.
JU Registrar, Dr Neeraj Sharma conducted proceedings of the Convocation.
Er Gulam Ali Khatana and Sat Sharma, Members of Parliament, Rajya Sabha; Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, Chairperson, J&K Waqf Board; Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary J&K ; Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani; Prof Ashok Kaul, Member Jammu University Council; Vice Chancellors of various universities, Heads of Departments, Deans, faculty and students were present in the Convocation.
