SRINAGAR, Oct 23: Member of Parliament (MP) representing Anantnag-Rajouri, Mian Altaf Ahmed has voiced his discontent over the sluggish pace of construction and the deteriorating condition of the strategically significant 220-km Jammu-Poonch National Highway (NH-144 A) .
Expressing concern over the current state of the 220-kilometer-long Jammu-Poonch highway, Altaf emphasized that its poor condition has been causing considerable inconvenience to the public. He criticized the slow progress on this crucial project by the BRO, asserting that it has undermined the road’s strategic importance and failed to uphold it’s commitment of fast paced development of this road.
In a statement issued today, the MP called upon the responsible authorities to promptly address these issues and expedite necessary actions to improve road conditions. These roads, crucial for connectivity within Jammu and Kashmir, are maintained by the Project Beacon, a unit of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
” The highway is in dilapidated condition causing inconvenience to the public. The slow pace of work on this important project has marred the purpose of this strategic important road project,” Altaf said.
He expressed disappointment over the slow pace of work and dilapidated road conditions of the strategic Jammu-Poonch highway and has sought immediate attention of the concerned authorities responsible for the maintenance and construction of the road projects along Jammu- Poonch highway.
The Lok Sabha Member said that immediate resurfacing and maintenance of Rajouri-Thanamandi-Bafliaz road is required to mitigate the extreme public inconvenience. He said that lakhs of pilgrims visit Shahdra Sharief Shrine and this unmaintained road is a serious inconvenience to visitors.
The MP said the Rajouri-Thanamandi-Bafliaz road holds a strategic significance and is important in connecting Srinagar with Jammu and various areas within the twin border districts. He said the road is currently in a dilapidated state and necessitates urgent intervention by the senior BRO officials. Altaf said he will take up the matter with the Union Defence Minister shortly.
