JAMMU, Oct 20: Parvez Rasool, the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to represent India, has announced his retirement from all formats of cricket, drawing the curtains on a remarkable 17-year First-Class career.
The 36-year-old all-rounder from Bijbehara, Kashmir, was a trailblazer for cricket in the region. With 352 wickets and 5,648 runs in First-Class cricket, Rasool carved a niche as one of the most dependable performers in the domestic circuit. He was twice honoured with the prestigious Lala Amarnath Award for the best all-rounder in the Ranji Trophy—in 2013-14 and 2017-18.
Rasool’s standout 2012-13 season, where he scored 594 runs and took 33 wickets, earned him a national call-up and a contract with the now-defunct IPL franchise Pune Warriors. He went on to play one ODI and one T20I for India, making history as J&K’s first international cricketer.
A former captain of the J&K team, Rasool played a pivotal role in its rise in domestic cricket. In recent years, he played league cricket in Sri Lanka and mentored young talents from the Valley. Having completed the BCCI Level-II coaching course, he now plans to continue contributing to the game through coaching and overseas leagues.
Reflecting on his journey, Rasool posted, “This may be the end of one chapter, but not the story. Though I step away from professional cricket, my heart remains on the field—mentoring, guiding and giving back.” His journey will remain an inspiration for aspiring cricketers across Jammu and Kashmir.
