JAMMU, Oct 19: Prominent social and political activist Jayesh Gupta has submitted a memorandum to the Secretary of the Union Home Ministry, urging the Central Government to take immediate action to provide relief and rehabilitation to the people of Jammu Province severely affected by last month’s devastating floods.
In his memorandum, Gupta highlighted the widespread destruction caused by the floods, which left thousands of families without homes, livelihoods, and access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, and shelter. He stated that while the local administration and civil society organizations have extended commendable support through rescue and relief efforts, the situation on the ground remains critical, with many people still struggling to survive in temporary shelters.
Gupta emphasized that land subsidence has worsened the crisis by rendering several residential areas uninhabitable, forcing displaced families to live under unsafe and unstable conditions. Many victims have also suffered complete property losses, while small business owners and farmers have lost their primary sources of income.
Calling for urgent intervention, Gupta appealed to the Government of India to announce immediate financial compensation, provide rehabilitation packages, initiate debt relief measures, and establish a special relief fund for Jammu Province. He also recommended the deployment of assessment teams to ensure transparent evaluation of damages and fair distribution of aid.
Gupta stated that in a democratic setup, it is the moral and constitutional duty of the government to stand with its citizens during times of distress. He expressed hope that the Central Government would take swift and meaningful action to help rebuild the lives of those affected and restore normalcy in Jammu Province.
