JU Law School observes World Mental Health Day with socio-legal focus

JAMMU, Oct 9: The Law School, University of Jammu, held a significant interactive session to commemorate World Mental Health Day today, focusing on the critical intersection of mental health and law.
The event, guided by Prof Seema Rohmetra, Director, The Law School, aimed to inculcate empathy and understanding among first-semester students.
The session started with a formal welcome address by Dr Monika Bhardwaj, who introduced Subash Gupta, former Judge and Member of the PSC J&K, as the keynote speaker. He delivered an address emphasizing the year 2025 theme’s relevance to recent humanitarian crises in Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the importance of supporting mental well-being, particularly in the face of natural disasters, conflicts, and public health emergencies.
Gupta’s discussion encompassed the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, and its alignment with International Human Rights standards, including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. He also explored civil and criminal laws protecting persons of unsound mind.
The session concluded with a call to build a more empathetic legal system, translating statutory provisions into tangible support. A dynamic Q&A session and active faculty participation enriched the discussion. Dr Nitan Sharma, Assistant Professor, coordinated the session and presented the vote of thanks.
