MADRID, Sep 23 : The Spanish government has approved a “total” arms embargo on Israel, sharpening the diplomatic hostility between Madrid and Jerusalem, in light of the European country’s increasingly anti-Israel policies under Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
The measure – a comprehensive package with multiple provisions – is meant to limit the IDF’s military capabilities, and thereby forcing them to stop its “genocide in Gaza.”
The decree prohibits all exports to Israel of defence material and dual-use products or technologies, and the import of such equipment to Spain, said the country’s Finance Minister Carlos Cuerpo says at a news conference, reports Times of Israel.
Additionally, it also seeks to block requests for the transit of aircraft fuel with any potential military applications, and bans imports of products originating from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including their advertising, Cuerpo added.
“This decree is a big step forward and is pioneering at the international level when it comes to a total arms embargo on Israel,” Cuerpo told a news conference after PM Sanchez’s cabinet approved the measure.
The government affirmed that the decree “consolidates in law” a ban on military equipment sales or purchases with Israel that it had applied since the start of the Israeli offensive in Gaza in 2023.
