JAMMU, Sept 13: Already reeling under massive traffic congestion due to road closures in view of the landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in different Jammu districts, the city is facing an additional burden as matador drivers continue to choke key approach roads and lanes, leaving commuters in distress.
Sources said while the entire traffic department remains engaged in de-congesting the National Highways and clearing district roads for stranded vehicles carrying essentials, the city’s interior roads have been left in disarray.
They said the commuters are struggling to cover even short distances due to traffic mismanagement.
According to them, one of the worst-hit areas is the stretch from the AG office to opposite SPMR Commerce College, which has turned into a daily nightmare for locals.
With Canal Road witnessing heavy congestion in recent days, they said, the matadors and other heavy vehicles have started diverting through this lane, creating chaos for residents near Commerce College, the Relief Commissioner (Migrants) office, and thousands of regular travellers.
Locals complained that despite repeatedly flagging the issue to police and traffic authorities, no action has been taken on the ground.
“Our repeated requests have fallen on deaf ears as the congestion here continues unchecked,” said a commuter who frequently travels between Shakti Nagar and Jewel area.
Another biker who uses Canal Road to commute between Paloura and Dogra Chowk said that a journey of barely 15–20 minutes now stretches into hours.
“Matadors have choked the entire AG office lane and traffic police are nowhere to be seen to provide relief,” he lamented.
When contacted, SSP Traffic Jammu, Farooq Qaiser, assured that strict measures would be taken to prevent matadors and heavy vehicles from using the lane.
“We will take immediate steps to ensure no one is allowed to congest city roads further. Commuters will get relief,” he said.
