JAMMU, Sept 12: National Conference (NC) additional general secretary and former minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today voiced deep concern over the damages caused by recent torrential rains and flash flooding, especially the alarming land sinking reported in Dargali and Barbalone mohallas of Kanger Panchayat in Block Bhalwal, Jammu North.
Visiting the affected localities, Sadhotra said several families were facing imminent danger as their houses had developed cracks and structural imbalances, leaving them uninhabitable. He demanded immediate compensation as a special dispensation for the victims, terming the crisis as “extraordinary” and beyond the scope of routine relief measures.
He warned that the sinking soil posed the risk of sudden collapses besides long-term hazards, causing severe physical and mental distress to families who had nowhere to go. Stressing the need for a comprehensive response, he sought urgent steps for rehabilitation and safety of residents.
Sadhotra called for a detailed survey by Geology and Mining experts and a structural audit of all houses in the danger zone to assess their stability. He also took up with the ACD Jammu the matter of reopening vital links to Kangar Panchayat, which had been cut off, further isolating the affected people.
Reiterating NC’s commitment to people’s welfare, Sadhotra assured residents that the party leadership, including Omar Abdullah, was closely monitoring the situation. He said the Government was responsive and steps were underway to provide both immediate relief and long-term safety to the victims.
During his visit, the NC leader also listened to other grievances of the locals and promised to pursue them with the concerned authorities for redressal.
Sadhotra was accompanied by Raghubir Singh Manhas (district president), Haji Bagh Ali (zonal secretary), Randhir Singh (district secretary), Rakesh Sharma (president, YNC Jammu), Ved Parkash Sharma (organizer, Jammu North), Mohd Razak, Ganga Ram Bhagat, Krishan Lal Chalgotra, Balram Singh, Ashu Sharma, Ashok Kumar, Ch Hamid and Mohd Sadiq.
