JAMMU, Sept 8: Torrential rains, cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides have wreaked havoc across Jammu and Kashmir, leaving a trail of destruction in both rural and urban areas. Key infrastructure including roads, bridges and water points has been damaged, while vast paddy fields have been submerged. Hundreds of houses have either been destroyed or washed away, rendering thousands of residents homeless. In many parts of Jammu, water supply has yet to be fully restored.
In this hour of crisis, the J&K Ex-Services League (JKESL), under the leadership of Major General Goverdhan Singh Jamwal (Retd), has once again risen to the occasion, working in close coordination with the civil administration. JKESL teams actively participated in search and rescue operations in Chashoti (Kishtwar) and Kathua district, among the worst-affected regions.
In a significant humanitarian initiative, JKESL with the active support of the Tiger Division, led by General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General M S Bains, has been supplying clean drinking water to flood-hit areas. Over 55 water bowsers have been dispatched to various localities in Jammu, including religious places and old age homes, where municipal water supply is yet to be restored.
In addition to emergency water supply, JKESL and Tiger Division have launched a major relief distribution program. Eight Flood Relief Camps are being organized – two in each brigade’s jurisdiction – to reach out to the worst-affected families. Approximately 200 families are being supported, each receiving 20 kg of ration, along with plastic tents, beds and mattresses where needed.
The combined efforts of serving personnel and veterans highlight the unity and spirit of service within the armed forces. The dedication of the Tiger Division’s brigades and battalions is truly commendable. Long live the Indian Army.
