SRINAGAR, Sept 8: Peoples Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti today said police is not filing an FIR against the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Chairperson despite repeated attempts by her party while alleging that the law in Kashmir is being turned upside down.
Addressing a press conference here, Iltija said, “First of all, we, PDP, are trying to register an FIR against the Chairperson of the Waqf Board. We first went to the Nigeen Police Station and then to the Hazratbal Police Station. We have not yet received a positive response.”

She alleged that while police swiftly detained dozens of people at the request of the Waqf chairperson and board members, they have failed to act on the PDP’s complaint. “What is surprising is that when the Waqf chairperson and Waqf member boards instigate the police to arrest those who chipped the emblem and dismantled it, within 24 hours about 50 people have been detained. We do not know how many of them will be charged with PSA,” she said.
According to Iltija, the action has targeted “innocent people” while sparing the actual provocation. “So, the law in Kashmir is going in reverse. Because those innocent people have been arrested who were not guilty. The Waqf Chairperson is responsible for deliberately provoking and inciting the religious sentiments of the majority of Kashmiri Muslims. The Waqf Chairperson has not taken any action against her. But unfortunately, on her request, the police immediately arrested the people who dismantled the Emblem,” she added.
She said she called the press conference to underline that due process was not being followed in the Valley.
Iltija stressed that the issue should not be reduced to patriotism. “The point is not about the emblem. Please don’t make it about patriotism. Do not make it about nationalism. You are conflating it and deliberately giving it the colour of nationalism. This is about our religion,” she said, adding that Islam strictly prohibits idol worship and depictions inside shrines, mosques, and dargahs.
