JAMMU, Sept 5: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former Minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today expressed grave concern over the continued neglect of Jammu and Kashmir on the flood mitigation front, questioning the tall claims of the “double engine Government” which, he said, has failed to deliver even after a decade of promises.
During his extensive tour of flood-affected areas of Azad Nagar Gadi Garh in Jammu South constituency, Sadhotra said the havoc caused by incessant rains has once again exposed the hollowness of the Government’s claims.
He pointed out that roads have been badly damaged, bridges rendered unsafe and power and utility services have faced repeated breakdowns.”This situation is not merely the outcome of heavy rainfall, but the manifestation of long-standing shortcomings in planning and execution,” Sadhotra observed, adding that had proper perspective planning been undertaken after the devastating 2014 floods, much of the current suffering could have been prevented.
The NC leader said, “Development cannot be reduced to “slogans and announcements” as has been the practice for over a decade. It has to be backed by vision, preparedness and a long-term strategy. Unfortunately, the absence of these elements has left people vulnerable to repeated hardships.”
Sadhotra accused the BJP-led government of focusing more on narratives than on result-oriented action.
“A Government’s performance is not measured by the slogans it raises but by the relief and stability it brings to the lives of the common people,” he remarked, adding that the Omar Abdullah-led NC Government was committed to course correction by prioritising infrastructure upgradation.
Calling for transparent, accountable and people-centric governance, the former Minister stressed that J&K deserves dependable infrastructure, efficient services and sustainable development.
“Development is a continuous process requiring commitment, consistency and sincerity of purpose, which the National Conference has always stood for,” he said and concluded by demanding that the BJP explain its unfulfilled commitments made under the banner of “double engine governance” over the last ten years.
