Rationalising GST for Growth

Sir,
The Prime Minister’s announcement of next-generation GST reforms is both timely and welcome. Since its launch in 2017, GST has been a landmark reform, yet multiple slabs and ambiguities have created distortions, burdening both businesses and households.
Rationalising GST into just two slabs—5% for essentials and 18% for most goods—will simplify compliance, restore fairness, and strengthen consumer confidence.
This move can reduce the effective tax burden, leaving more disposable income to spur private consumption, which is presently stagnant. Cutting taxes on essentials like health and education is particularly crucial to national growth goals.
However, ensuring fair categorisation of items and that businesses pass on benefits to consumers will be vital for success. At a time of global trade challenges, stimulating domestic demand through such reforms is the right step forward.
