Two arrested PP busts BKI-backed terror module

CHANDIGARH, Aug 31: Punjab Police has dismantled a Babbar Khalsa International (BKI)-backed terror module, arresting two operatives and thwarting potential attacks on security establishments, the state’s top cop said today.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here the operation was carried out by Punjab Police s Counter Intelligence (CI) units in Pathankot and Ludhiana, along with the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) Amritsar.
The arrested individuals, identified as Sarwan Kumar of Malhian village and Balwinder Singh of Jakkriya village, both in Gurdaspur, were found in possession of one Arges hand grenade, a .30 bore star mark pistol, and three live cartridges during the operation.
This follows another recent success by CI Pathankot, which disrupted a targeted killing plot by the same network, apprehending four individuals, including two juveniles, and recovering two .30 bore star mark pistols.
DGP Yadav revealed that preliminary investigation indicate the arrested operatives were acting under instructions from foreign-based BKI handlers, facilitated through an intermediary.
A case has been registered under relevant legal provisions, and efforts are underway to apprehend other members of the network.
AIG CI Pathankot Sukhminder Singh Mann elaborated that the operatives were tasked with conducting reconnaissance on security installations and were supplied with explosives and funds. The accused used encrypted apps and virtual phone numbers to communicate with their handlers.
Further investigation is on to uncover the full extent of the BKI-backed network and probe prior crimes linked to the arrested individuals.
A case has been filed under FIR No. 48 dated August 30, 2025, at SSOC Amritsar Police Station, invoking Section 25 of the Arms Act, Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act. (UNI)
