JAMMU, Aug 31: Facing the threat of floods after days of incessant rainfall in Jammu region, residents of Ward Number 7, Nai Basti, Akalpur Lower Muthi have taken matters into their own hands by clearing muck and garbage from a canal distributary.
They alleged that the administration and municipal authorities failed to act despite repeated appeals.
The residents said drains in the area have remained blocked for days, with heaps of garbage lying unattended, forcing them to launch a risky cleanup drive on their own.
“We are risking our lives by removing the filth. Snakes, sharp iron pieces, and broken glass are lying everywhere, but we fear floodwaters more than these dangers,” a local resident said.

People expressed fear that heavy rains could lead to overflowing drains and flash floods, inundating their homes.
“If anything happens here, who will take responsibility? Why is the Government waiting for a tragedy to occur?” questioned another resident.
The locals urged the authorities to immediately clear the drains, lift accumulated garbage, and take preventive steps to ensure their safety, warning that only timely action can avert a disaster.
