BGSBU bags Rs 20.54 lakh DST grant for Kashmiri TTS & STT Development

RAJOURI, Aug 30: Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) has achieved a significant milestone by securing a prestigious grant of Rs 20.54 lakhs under the Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs (TIDE) programme, funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
The funded project, led by Dr Aadil Lawaye Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Sciences and Dr Qamar Rayees Khan, Head Department of Computer Sciences, focuses on the development of advanced Kashmiri Text-to-Speech (TTS) and Speech-to-Text (STT) systems.
This landmark initiative is poised to enhance digital accessibility for the visually impaired and others with print or reading disabilities, while also contributing to the preservation and modernization of the Kashmiri language.
Prof Jawaid Iqbal, Vice Chancellor of BGSBU, congratulated the project team and emphasized the importance of the initiative. He said that this achievement reflects the University’s growing role in leveraging technology for social good. The development of Kashmiri TTS and STT systems will not only empower the visually impaired but also help safeguard our linguistic heritage. He appreciated Dr Aadil Lawaye and Dr Qamar Rayees for their sustained dedication and impactful innovations, which continue to advance the discipline.
