JAMMU, Aug 28: National conference additional general secretary and former minister, Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, today visited Gujjar Nagar, Mehar Basti and Gusain Basti (lower Gujjar Nagar) in Ward Number 6 of Jammu Municipal Corporation to assess the damages caused by torrential rains and flooding.
Expressing concern over the plight of residents, Sadhotra said household goods and belongings had been destroyed under nearly five feet of mud and water. He stressed that the magnitude of waterlogging required immediate and large-scale intervention from the administration to provide relief to distressed families.
Terming the deployment of only 30 Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) workers as grossly inadequate, Sadhotra said manpower and machinery must be strengthened on a war footing to restore normalcy. He informed that he had taken up the issue with the Deputy Commissioner Jammu, besides urging the Chief Engineers of Power Development Department and Jal Shakti to ensure immediate restoration of electricity and water supply. He also asked the Deputy Commissioner to consider emergency assistance for families who lost bedding, clothes and essentials.
Sadhotra warned that stagnant water, filth and mud posed serious risks of water-borne and vector-borne diseases. He urged the Director Health Services Jammu to depute sanitation teams and launch fumigation and cleanliness drives in the affected localities.
Reiterating NC’s solidarity with flood victims, Sadhotra said NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah was monitoring the situation, while Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had personally visited flood-hit areas of Jammu region.
Sadhotra was accompanied by NC leaders and workers including Mohd Ayoub Malik (provincial secretary), Raghubir Singh (district president Jammu), Naresh Bittu (district president Jammu), Sahil Kerni (district president YNC Urban), Rakesh Sharma (district president Rural), Aslam, Rajesh Bakshi, Jatinder Singh Lucky, Gourav Kapoor, Sewak Singh, Shabir Samyal, Gurmeet Singh Jimmi, Karan Singh, Shafaqat, Asif Malik, Veer Ji Salathia, Natish Goswami, Sandeep Singh Manhas and Asanand.
