Kargil, Aug 24: The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) today strongly condemned the Ladakh administration’s decision to revoke land allotted for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL).
In this regard a press conference was organised here today, which was addressed by the various leaders of KDA.
The KDA, an umbrella body of political, religious and social groups in Kargil, reiterated its core demands for full statehood, constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule to protect Ladakh’s land and culture and employment guarantees for locals.
Addressing to the media persons, the leaders of alliance termed the move a politically motivated act of “suppression and witch hunt,” aimed at silencing voices seeking greater autonomy for the Union Territory.
“The cancellation of land for HIAL is not just about one institution; it is a message to those fighting for the rights of Ladakhis. But we will not be silenced,” the alliance declared.
Raising alarm over what they described as “increasing militarisation” in the region, KDA leaders expressed concern that growing deployment of military and paramilitary forces could pose risks to Ladakh’s fragile ecology and unique cultural heritage.
Unveiling their future course of action, the KDA announced plans for intensified protests and said they are considering united demonstrations with civil society groups across Ladakh.
The leaders vowed to step up pressure on the Central Government until meaningful dialogue is initiated on their demands.
The leaders also signalled an escalation in its agitation, setting the stage for heightened political mobilization in Ladakh over Statehood and constitutional rights.
